In simple terms, a root canal is a treatment to repair and save a tooth that has been badly decayed. Chances are, there has been some damage or infection to the tooth pulp/nerve, causing bacteria to build up around the area. During the procedure, the infected pulp is removed and the area will be thoroughly cleaned before the gap is filled and sealed.
How do I know if I need one?
Here are some symptoms that may indicate that you need a root canal treatment:
Swollen or tender gums
Sharp pain when eating
Chipped or cracked tooth
Persistent sensitivity to cold or hot food
Darkened gums or teeth that change colour
Facial swelling
Will it hurt?
After the treatment, you may experience some discomfort for about a week. Try to avoid chewing on the treated area and continue to practise good dental hygiene while coming for regular dental checkups. If there is a reinfection, contact the clinic for an appointment and your dentist will conduct a check up.
