7 Ways Students Can Manage Discomfort from Metal Braces

student braces singapore | MySmile Dental

Wearing student braces can feel uncomfortable at first, especially if you’re adjusting to them while managing school life. From sore gums to irritated cheeks, the first few weeks can be tough. If you’re studying in Singapore, the warm and humid climate may also add to the discomfort, making it even more important to care for your teeth properly.

Whether you’ve just started your braces journey or recently had an adjustment, this guide shares seven simple and effective ways to relieve pain and adapt to metal braces in Singapore.

1. Use Orthodontic Wax

Metal braces can sometimes rub against the inside of your cheeks and lips, causing irritation or small cuts. Orthodontic wax is a soft, protective layer that you can place over brackets and wires to prevent this.

Orthodontic wax is safe to use and helps reduce friction while your mouth adjusts. You can buy it at most pharmacies, or ask your dentist for a supply during your visit.

2. Rinse with Warm Salt Water

One of the easiest and most effective home remedies for braces-related pain is a warm salt water rinse. This helps reduce swelling, soothe sores, and keep your mouth clean.

Just mix 1 teaspoon of salt into a cup of warm water. Swish it around your mouth for about 30 seconds, then spit it out. Medical News Today explains that salt water rinses are particularly useful for healing small wounds in the mouth.

Use this rinse two to three times daily, especially during the first few weeks after getting your braces.

3. Choose Soft Foods

Hard or crunchy foods can put pressure on your braces, making the pain worse. During your first few weeks (or after adjustments), it’s best to stick to soft foods like mashed potatoes, yoghurt, porridge, bananas, or scrambled eggs.

Avoid sticky foods, chewing gum, popcorn, or anything that might damage your brackets. Eating soft foods reduces chewing strain and helps your mouth heal faster.

4. Apply Cold Packs or Sip Cold Water

Cold helps numb pain and reduce inflammation. Try placing a cold pack on the outside of your mouth for a few minutes when you feel discomfort. Alternatively, sipping cold water throughout the day can soothe sore areas.

This tip is especially helpful after visiting your dentist for tightening or adjustments.

5. Practise Good Oral Hygiene

Keeping your mouth clean is essential when you have braces. Plaque build-up and food trapped in brackets can cause gum swelling and increase discomfort.

Brush your teeth gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush and use floss designed for braces. Water flossers are also helpful for reaching tricky areas. The American Dental Association stresses that good oral hygiene prevents additional problems that can worsen the pain.

6. Take Pain Relief if Needed

If the pain becomes too much, consider taking over-the-counter medication like paracetamol or ibuprofen. Make sure to follow the dosage instructions and check with your parents or a healthcare professional if you are unsure.

These medications can help manage pain, but should only be used when necessary.

7. Give It Time and Stay Positive

It’s important to remember that the discomfort won’t last forever. Most students get used to their braces after a few weeks. In the meantime, try to stay distracted with schoolwork, music, or hobbies.

Every bit of soreness means you’re one step closer to a straighter, healthier smile!
